Maszlee to defend Simpang Renggam seat

Incumbent Simpang Renggam MP Maszlee Malik has revealed that he will defend his parliamentary seat in the upcoming general election.

Maszlee said PKR president Anwar Ibrahim gave him the mandate to contest there when they met earlier today.

“I was asked by the president to come to his office this morning and received a mandate from him to ‘defend Simpang Renggam at all costs, for the future of Malaysia, and for the future of our education (system)’,” he added.

The former education minister captured Simpang Renggam under the Pakatan Harapan banner in the 2018 general election with a majority of 3,475 votes against PAS' Jubri Selamat and Gerakan’s Liang Teck Meng.

Maszlee, during Harapan's time in Putrajaya, quit Bersatu alongside former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad but remained an independent MP even after the formation of Pejuang.

Maszlee was a former academician who made his political debut in Simpang Renggam after joining Bersatu under Mahathir's leadership.

He rose to the rank of a Bersatu supreme council member before his sacking in May 2020 following internal conflict sparked by the party's decision to break apart from Harapan. This came after the Sheraton Move in February of the same year which saw Perikatan Nasional's rise to power.

Despite being an independent MP, Maszlee remained the Harapan education committee chairperson.

During the Johor polls earlier this year, he had vied for the Layang-Layang seat but was defeated by Umno’s Abdul Mutalip Abd Rahim. - Mkini
