KUANTAN: The Malaysian armed forces (MAF) has placed 16,612 personnel, including 782 officers, on standby for the floods, caretaker defence minister Hishammuddin Hussein said.
He said the personnel would be deployed to 5,496 hotspots nationwide, Bernama reported.
Hishammuddin said they also included 4,301 first responders tasked with carrying out rescue work and evacuating victims to temporary relief centres (PPS) as soon as possible.
“MAF has the capability to raise the number of personnel and assets at any time if needed, in line with the instructions from the National Security Council (MKN),” he was quoted as saying.
Hishammuddin was speaking to reporters in Pahang today.
Also present were army chief Gen Zamrose Mohd Zain and state administration heads.
Hishammuddin said chief of defence forces Gen Affendi Buang and the other service chiefs have been ordered to ensure that MAF personnel were fully prepared for possible floods.
“Overall, MAF is prepared to deal with floods, even if it occurs during the 15th general election,” he said, adding that the public should adhere to the instruction of the authorities during a flood. - FMT
