PETALING JAYA: The decision on whether to dissolve the legislative assemblies in the PAS-led states will be determined after the party’s central committee meeting in Kuala Lumpur today.
Terengganu menteri besar Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar said PAS had repeatedly highlighted the inappropriate timing of having the 15th general election (GE15) during the monsoon season.
Ahmad, who is also a PAS vice-president, said the people would also make all kinds of assumptions about the motives behind the dissolution of Parliament, adding that public surveys had shown more than two-thirds of the people did not agree to GE15 being held at this time.
“To force the elections to be held during a time when the rakyat is going through tough times is not proper and gives the indication that the party calling for the elections is doing so for selfish reasons,” he said in an Utusan Malaysia report.
“As such, those who pressured for the decision on the dissolution (of Parliament) are a liability to the country and should be rejected in the coming general election,” he added.
Terengganu, Kedah and Kelantan are led by PAS.
PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang had also expressed disappointment that GE15 was being rushed.
Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob dissolved Parliament yesterday, paving the way for elections to be held within 60 days.
He maintained that the decision to dissolve Parliament was to return the mandate to the people in view of the political instability after three different administrations in the span of two-and-a-half years.
Ismail also urged the state governments to dissolve their legislative assemblies in line with the dissolution of Parliament.
Meanwhile, Penang chief minister Chow Kon Yeow said the question of whether the state legislative assembly would be dissolved would be referred to the Pakatan Harapan (PH) presidential council meeting tomorrow night.
“We will wait for the decision of the presidential council,” he said.
Yesterday, Barisan Nasional (BN) chairman Ahmad Zahid Hamidi announced that the BN-led states of Perlis, Pahang and Perak would dissolve their legislative assemblies simultaneously with the dissolution of Parliament. - FMT
