PETALING JAYA: A divisional leader of PKR was arrested this evening for obstructing traffic while investigating claims of possible electoral fraud, a charge which his lawyer says is nonsensical.
Rozan Azen Mat Rasip, PKR’s vice-chief for the Batu constituency, was nabbed at 6pm and will spend a night in the lockup at Jinjang police station.
Rozan’s lawyer, Gurmukh Singh said it did not make sense for his client to be arrested for obstructing traffic. He said Rozan was walking along the road when he was nabbed by police at Taman Koperasi Polis 2, Batu Muda.
“I don’t see why he should be arrested,” Gurmukh told FMT.
He said Rozan was investigating claims that some voters had their voting addresses changed without their consent and knowledge.
“You cannot arrest people for doing something that is for the benefit of the public.”
Gurmukh also said that Rozan’s alleged offence was not a serious one as it carried a maximum fine of RM400.
“I have asked the police to release him on police bail. In the event they need to question him, he would cooperate.”
He said Rozan was likely to be released before 10am on Saturday.
“But for me there’s no reason to keep in a lockup,” he said. Rozan had undergone surgery on a tumour two months ago and also suffers from epilepsy, he said. - FMT
