KUALA LUMPUR: The police force will face a shortage of manpower should it flood during the coming general election (GE15), says home minister Hamzah Zainudin.
“Nearly 75,000 policemen were assigned for GE14. For GE15, the police expect more than 94,000 policemen to be deployed,” he told reporters after attending a briefing at Bukit Aman.
“(Plus) the increase in the number of voters has led to the increase in the number of voting channels which requires additional policemen to be deployed.
“A police officer will be stationed at each voting channel and they will be assisted by a Rela officer,” he said.
“What we are afraid of is GE15 and floods happening at the same time,” he said, adding that the authorities were discussing their plans should floods hit.
He said the ministry had conducted comprehensive simulations in all states as part of their preparation for floods during the election.
He said that around 21,018 policemen, 367 boats, 845 four-wheel drives, 454 lorries and 11 aerial assets are ready to be mobilised in the event of floods. - FMT
