PETALING JAYA: The government has, with immediate effect, rescinded the “economy class only” domestic air travel ruling that it imposed on civil servants last July as a cost-trimming move.
They can now travel in business class if they are eligible under a directive issued in 2020.
Treasury secretary-general Asri Hamidon said in a circular issued recently the Cabinet made the decision to rescind the ruling at its meeting on Sept 10.
According to the circular, civil servants in Grade 53 and above and police officers with the rank of senior assistant commissioner and higher are eligible for business class. All others can travel only in economy class.
As for overseas travel, those in Super Grade A and the deputy inspector-general of police and above are entitled for first class seats. Those in Grade 53 to Super Grade B (between the rank of SAC and commissioner in the police force) are eligible for business class. Other officers are entitled only to economy class.
In July, a Treasury directive announced several cost-cutting measures for civil servants at all levels to tighten government expenditure, citing as reasons global inflation and the rising costs of goods.
Among the cutbacks were economy class domestic air travel for all grades of officers and a limit on the number of officers allowed to travel abroad with ministers, deputy ministers and senior government officials. - FMT
