PETALING JAYA: Muda president Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman will soon announce whether he will defend the Muar parliamentary seat or contest in another constituency in the 15th general election (GE15).
He told FMT he will make the announcement, either this Sunday or next Saturday, at an event in Muar.
On Pakatan Harapan’s (PH) agreement to form an electoral pact with Muda for GE15, Syed Saddiq said it was a good development and brought hope that the coalition could regain control of Putrajaya.
“I will continue negotiations with PH to ensure that we champion Malaysians, regardless of race and religion,” he said.
Syed Saddiq added that the party would also have discussions on the use of the PH logo and the seat allocations.
In the last general election, Syed Saddiq won the Muar parliamentary seat with a majority of 6,953 votes on a PH ticket, defeating Barisan Nasional and PAS candidates. He was in Bersatu then.
Yesterday, PH chairman Anwar Ibrahim said it would be difficult to bring Muda in as PH’s fifth component party as it would need to be approved by the Registrar of Societies.
Syed Saddiq had declared the party’s intention to join PH last month. An official application was made on Sept 9.
PH components have been at odds as to whether Muda should be welcomed into the coalition, with PKR adamantly against it.
Some leaders said Muda did not add any value to the coalition, while others claimed that the party would be a liability. - FMT
