KUALA LUMPUR: Umno is expected to face off against PAS in 27 parliamentary seats after the Islamic party failed to fulfill three conditions set by Umno to resume an electoral alliance.
Umno vice-president Khaled Nordin said the non-fulfilment of the three conditions automatically meant that cooperation between the two parties had fallen through.
The three requirements are for PAS to pull out from Perikatan Nasional (PN), cut political ties with Bersatu, and officially declare that it would leave PN and Bersatu.
“If there is no cooperation with PAS, then both parties will compete (for the 27 seats),” he said after an Umno leadership meeting last night. He said Umno will begin selecting election candidates tomorrow.
The conditions were set by Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi last week. Zahid said Umno would return to the negotiating table if PAS agreed to the three conditions.
Ties between Umno and PAS leaders have deteriorated because of the close relationship between PAS and Bersatu. Last month, Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin declared that Barisan Nasional was his party’s main enemy at the general election.
PAS has tried to maintain an alliance with Umno and Bersatu in the name of Muslim unity.
On Oct 3, PAS said it would have discussions with Umno’s top leaders on an electoral understanding over 27 parliamentary seats and state assembly seats in Selangor, Negeri Sembilan and Penang. - FMT
