The Lembah Pantai parliamentary seat will be drawn into focus in the upcoming 15th general election (GE15) as it is likely to see competition between big names in the nation’s politics.
The incumbent, Fahmi Fadzil, who won on a PKR ticket in GE14 and is expected to defend the seat, will possibly face a candidate who is said to be influential - Umno supreme council member Mohd Razlan Rafii.
An Umno source told Malaysiakini that Razlan’s (above, right) name is on the party's list of GE15 candidates.
"Razlan’s name is on the GE15 candidate list and he will contest for the Lembah Pantai seat against Fahmi," the source said.
The Election Commission (EC) will hold a special meeting to discuss and determine important dates related to GE15 on Oct 20, including polling and nomination day.
Umno is still in the process of finalising the list of party candidates who will contest in GE15, which will be held in the near future.
On Sept 18, its vice president Mahdzir Khalid reportedly said that Umno’s various state liaison bodies had started submitting candidate lists to be finalised at the party’s top level.
Umno secretary-general Ahmad Maslan had also reportedly explained that his party had received a list of candidates from the party’s state liaison bodies for GE15.
PKR’s seat since 2008
Meanwhile, PKR will finalise the candidates contesting in the upcoming polls on Oct 19 at the latest, a day before the EC’s meeting.
In the last general election, PKR retained Lembah Pantai through Fahmi with a majority of 5,598 votes, even without PKR leader Nurul Izzah Anwar who held the seat in 2008 and 2013.
Fahmi defeated BN candidate Raja Nong Chik Raja Zainal Abidin and PAS candidate Fauzi Abu Bakar in a three-way fight in 2018.
Fahmi received 33,313 votes, compared to Raja Nong Chik (27,715 votes) and Fauzi (5,277 votes). - Mkini
