PETALING JAYA: Bersatu Youth chief Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal says he is open to contesting the Titiwangsa parliamentary seat in the coming general election (GE15).
He said this was in line with his position as head of the Titiwangsa Bersatu division.
“If you ask me where I am eligible to contest in, it’s Titiwangsa, because I am the head of the division there,” he told FMT.
“I have done work in Bagan Serai (Perak) but I know there is an incumbent (Bersatu) MP there. No matter what, I will follow the party’s instructions.
“If the party says I don’t have to compete, then I won’t.”
In May, Wan Fayhsal said the Bagan Serai seat was “among the choices” on his list of seats to contest in GE15.
He told Utusan Malaysia he had been active in the community over the past two years during the Covid-19 pandemic.
However, the former MP, Dr Noor Azmi Ghazali, has hinted that he wants to defend the seat.
Noor Azmi won the seat under the Barisan Nasional ticket in 2018 before moving to Bersatu.
Caretaker women, family and community development minister Rina Harun held the Titiwangsa seat before Parliament’s dissolution, but there are rumours she will contest in Sepang in GE15. Rina is the Sepang Bersatu Wanita chief.
Wan Fayhsal said it would be tough to win in Titiwangsa as it had become a battleground for multi-cornered fights.
“It’s hard to predict, but if I am destined to compete there, I will do my best,” he said.
He said the list of Bersatu candidates for GE15 was expected to be completed by Monday as it required strict screening, including involvement in criminal cases.
“Bersatu is different from other parties because if there are ‘red flags’, we will not allow candidates to contest,” he said. - FMT
