The former Umno information chief says withholding inquiry findings risks fuelling suspicion that something is being hidden.
Shahril said that whenever an RCI report is not released promptly, it only raises questions about whether information is being withheld.
“Even if the reason given is true, people will now assume something is being hidden.
“So even if the explanation is sincere, it still has negative implications,” he said on the latest episode of the Keluar Sekejap podcast.
Shahril also questioned the timing of the report’s release, noting that the inquiry had completed its work about two years ago.
His co-host Khairy Jamaluddin pointed out that the RCI was set up by the Cabinet under former prime minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob, not by the current government.
He said the inquiry, chaired by a former chief justice, examined Tabung Haji’s management between 2014 and 2020, including the transfer of underperforming assets to special purpose vehicle Urusharta Jamaah Sdn Bhd after 2018.
“The RCI was set up during our time because we had nothing to hide,” said the former Umno Youth chief.
Khairy said former Tabung Haji chairman Azeez Rahim had also repeatedly called for the report to be tabled in Parliament, as he was confident that he had not committed any wrongdoing.
He also dismissed speculation that releasing the report could be used as political pressure against Umno, saying the party’s leaders supported legal action against anyone found to have abused their position.
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said the Cabinet would decide on Wednesday whether to make the RCI report public. He had said the report’s release was delayed to allow Tabung Haji’s recovery and restructuring to proceed without affecting depositors’ confidence. - FMT
