PETALING JAYA:
An NGO based in Ampang has taken in 113 refugees, including 110 Rohingyas, who were detained after gathering outside the UNHCR office at Jalan Bukit Petaling, Kuala Lumpur.

Kuala Lumpur police chief Fadil Marsus said the refugees left the city’s contingent headquarters at about 4pm today for an undisclosed location arranged by the NGO, Kaladan.

The youngest in the group is a one-month-old baby while the oldest is 60 years old, he said.

Earlier, it was reported that 110 Rohingya refugees were brought to the police headquarters for screening by the police and UNHCR. All of them were found to be valid UNHCR cardholders.

They had arrived in Kuala Lumpur on three buses from Penang, seeking assistance from UNHCR after claiming they had been evicted from a settlement in Kuala Muda, Penang, where some said they had lived for nearly two decades.

The refugees were later detained after Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim warned that stern action would be taken against them. - FMT
