Negri Sembilan polls: Early voting turnout hits 91.06pct

SEREMBAN: Early voting for the Negri Sembilan election concluded today, with 91.06 per cent, or 14,995 of the 16,467 eligible voters, casting their ballots.

Election Commission secretary Datuk Khairul Shahril Idrus said in a statement that the early voters comprised military personnel and their spouses, as well as police personnel.

Early voting, which began about 8am, was conducted at 38 polling centres across the state.

Of the 38 centres, 18 closed about noon, two at 2pm and the remaining 18 at 5pm.

The state election will see 103 candidates contesting 36 seats.

Pakatan Harapan is fielding candidates in all 36 seats, while Barisan Nasional is contesting 25 seats, Bersatu 24 and Perikatan Nasional 11.

Also contesting are Barisan Jemaah Islamiah Se-Malaysia, Parti Orang Asli Malaysia and Parti Sosialis Malaysia, each fielding one candidate, along with four Independents.

In the 2023 state election, PH won 17 of the 36 seats, followed by BN with 14 and PN with five.

The state legislative assembly was dissolved on June 5 to pave the way for the election. Polling will be held on Aug 1. - NST
