DAP: A-G must explain decision to discontinue case against Muhyiddin

KUALA LUMPUR: The Attorney-General must provide a detailed explanation for his decision to discontinue part of the prosecution against former prime minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, said DAP.

DAP chairman Gobind Singh Deo said transparency was essential as the case was of significant public interest.

"When criminal charges are brought against any individual, the standard expectation is that the prosecution has thoroughly evaluated the evidence and established a strong basis to proceed.

"The public is entitled to know what specific material factors or legal considerations changed to prompt the decision to halt the process at this stage," he said in a statement.

Gobind said public confidence in the A-G and the integrity of the criminal justice system as a whole would be severely eroded if active, high-profile prosecutions were discontinued midway without clear justification and a full explanation to the public.

Earlier today, Muhyiddin was acquitted by the High Court of four of seven charges linked to the Jana Wibawa projects.

He was discharged and acquitted (DAA) of one charge of using his position to obtain RM200 million in bribes and three money laundering charges involving the same amount after the prosecution applied to discontinue the case.

Judge Noor Ruwena Md Nurdin made the ruling after considering the prosecution's application for a discharge without acquittal (DNAA) and the defence's request for a full acquittal. - NST
