Lorry driver gets 9 years, 5 strokes for raping teenage sister-in-law

PETALING JAYA:

The Muar sessions court today sentenced a lorry driver to nine years’ imprisonment and five strokes of the rotan after he pleaded guilty to raping his sister-in-law in 2024, resulting in her becoming pregnant and giving birth to a child.

Berita Harian reported that the 38-year-old man entered his plea after the charge was read out before judge Emelia Kaswati Khalid.

According to the charge, the father of nine raped the 16-year-old at a house in Batu Pahat at 12.30am on July 28, 2024, when his wife was not at home.

The charge was framed under Section 376(1) of the Penal Code, which provides for up to 20 years’ imprisonment and whipping.

The incident came to light after the victim missed her period and suffered stomach pains. Her mother then took her to a hospital, where a doctor confirmed she was two months’ pregnant.

The victim then lodged a police report, and the man was later arrested. The victim gave birth to a boy last year.

Deputy public prosecutor Diyana Najihah Fauzi prosecuted, while the accused was represented by Syafie Naim, a lawyer from the National Legal Aid Foundation.

The court also ordered the accused to undergo counselling throughout his sentence and police monitoring for a year after his release. - FMT
