Malaysia Day calls for mature, resilient society – Wan Junaidi

KUCHING: Malaysia Day should serve as a national platform for reflection to assess how far the country has succeeded in building a mature, capable and magnanimous society in facing the challenges of the times.

The Yang Dipertua Negeri of Sarawak, Tun Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar, said the strength of a nation is not measured solely by economic progress or physical development, but also depends on maturity and wisdom in managing its diversity.

"Malaysia today is entering an era that demands new ways of thinking. Global competition is becoming increasingly complex, driven by artificial intelligence, the digital economy and geopolitical changes.

"In this situation, we cannot merely be consumers of change. Instead, we must be the creators of the future," he said in his message in conjunction with the 2026 Malaysia Day celebration.

Wan Junaidi said Malaysia Day also served as a reminder that true progress could only be achieved when no one was left behind in the nation's development.

He said the elderly, persons with disabilities, rural communities and vulnerable groups must continue to be given attention so that they too could enjoy the fruits of the nation's prosperity.

"I also call for a culture of excellence to be continuously fostered in every field, whether in education, research, sports, the arts or public service. We must always strive to achieve the best standards at the international level.

"I also wish to see more young Sarawakians emerge as scientists, engineers, founders of technology companies, researchers, social entrepreneurs and community leaders," he said. - NST
