Wong Lee Ping says the family has limited avenues to pursue an appeal but hopes its concerns will be heard.
In a Facebook post, Yap Shing Xuen’s mother, Wong Lee Ping, shared links to a petition urging the AGC to appeal, and to the AGC’s public complaints system.
She said the family’s legal avenues were limited as the decision to file an appeal and how it should be pursued ultimately rested with the prosecution.
“So, the only thing we can do now is to raise our voices, so that our concerns can be seen and heard,” she said.
Wong said the family was not asking anyone to prejudge the outcome of the case.
“We only hope that the proper legal process will be given serious consideration, the right to appeal, where legally available, can be duly exercised, and that the voice of a mother who has lost her daughter will be heard,” she said.
The Shah Alam High Court yesterday acquitted the teenager, finding that he was of unsound mind when the offence was committed.
Justice Adlin Abdul Majid nonetheless ordered the boy to be detained at the pleasure of the Selangor sultan at Hospital Bahagia Ulu Kinta in Perak, where he will undergo treatment.
The boy was charged with fatally stabbing Shing Xuen in the girls’ toilet of their school between 9.20am and 9.35am on Oct 14 last year.
In January, he was declared fit to stand trial and able to mount his defence after completing a psychiatric assessment at Hospital Bahagia Ulu Kinta.
The murder trial began on Aug 3 with proceedings held in camera since the case involved a minor. He was ordered to enter his defence on Aug 13. - FMT
