Umno Youth chief Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh has shifted the blame to DAP leaders for their statements he claims were disruptive to public order and led to declining support for Pakatan Harapan in several by-elections.
Responding to Johor DAP chairperson Liew Chin Tong, Akmal pointed out that the number of Chinese voters had also declined during the Sungai Bakap by-election in July, several months prior to his feud with Seputeh MP Teresa Kok.
“Even in the Sungai Bakap by-election, Chinese voters did not vote. Is that also Dr Akmal Saleh’s fault? Even though Akmal is not in Sungai Bakap?
“You should ask your leader who issued a statement that disturbs the peace of the country, not blame the person who responded to your leader’s statement,” stressed Akmal.
Liew (above, right) previously said that Akmal and Kok’s verbal spat over the halal issue had caused Chinese voters in the recent Mahkota by-election to be angry and disappointed, so they did not come out to vote.
“Do you want to blame me? That is up to you and your party.
“The important thing is that Umno needs to continue to change for the better so that we earn the people’s trust.
“We remain firm in defending the principle of protecting Islam and the nation regardless of who we are friends with,” he said in a Facebook post.
Akmal also advised DAP to follow the example of MCA who worked hard and finally get their core Chinese voters to vote as promised.
Previously, several media reports stated that the total percentage of Chinese voters who went out to vote in the Mahkota by-election was only around 34 percent.
In the Sungai Bakap polls, only 47 percent of Chinese voters turned out to vote which was attributed as one of the factors that caused Harapan to lose in the by-election. - Mkini
