Netizens slam poster on fuel rules with erroneous coat of arms

A poster regarding new restrictions on the sale of RON95 petrol has drawn public criticism on social media for its erroneous depiction of the national coat of arms.

The issue went viral after a netizen posted about the coat of arms spotted at a Shell petrol station in Kuala Lumpur on the microblogging platform Threads.

While the coat of arms looks similar at first glance, closer inspection reveals clear differences.

Among the discrepancies, the motto “Bersekutu Bertambah Mutu” (unity is strength) is illegible, including its Jawi script rendition.

The same goes for the images of the krises, the 14-pointed star, the Penang state emblem, the Sarawak Coat of Arms, and the hibiscus - nearly every element is off.

The poster is an infographic about key points of the Control of Supplies (Prohibition of Sale and Purchase of Controlled Article) (RON 95 Petrol) Regulations 2026, which came into effect on April 1.

It also bears the name of the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry.

‘Why use AI?’

The netizen, who expressed frustration online, suspected the image may have been AI-generated.

They questioned why AI was used at all when the correct version is readily available from official sources.

The erroneous coat of arms

Sources confirmed the error had been made at a fuel station in Kuala Lumpur, adding that the poster has since been taken down.

A check by Malaysiakini found that other stations had also received the same graphic, though none had displayed it yet.

Zailani Bohari, who manages a Shell station in Petaling Jaya, said he too had received the incorrect poster, but stressed that his team was not responsible for producing it.

“We did not make any unauthorised edits to the poster,” he told Malaysiakini.

Malaysiakini has also reached out to Shell Malaysia for comment. - Mkini
