JOHOR BARU: A surau congregant in Taman Universiti, Skudai, was left in shock after discovering a baby girl abandoned at the premises on Saturday.
The incident was shared on social media and went viral today.
A surau congregant told the New Straits Times that the discovery was made after Maghrib prayers when her brother-in-law, who is in his 40s, was walking towards the parking area.
He was startled to find the infant left there.
The baby was asleep, wrapped only in a green cloth without mittens or booties.
He contacted the police. An ambulance arrived and took the baby to hospital, she said.
Meanwhile, Johor Women, Family and Community Development Committee chairman Khairin-Nisa Ismail said the infant is currently undergoing medical examinations at a hospital.
She said the baby is expected to be placed in a shelter once police clearance is obtained.
"For now, the baby is reported to be in good health with no issues. Once we receive the green light from the police, the state government will ensure she is placed in a safe environment," she said.
Earlier, a video of the discovery went viral on social media, showing the moment the congregant found the infant after prayers.
It is understood that no identification documents were found with the baby. - NST
