Does this happen in Malaysia? Cinemagoers rue popcorns not made fresh; mars movie experience

STICKY, gooey, freshly made popcorn – that’s the standard staple for classic cinemagoing experience. It has been ingrained in the minds (and stomachs) of film enthusiasts for decades.

So imagine the shock and disappointment of one such film fan when she discovered pre-packed popcorn at an undisclosed cineplex.

Sharing pictures of the not-freshly-made snacks, Ice (@vibridgerton) expressed disappointment that her expectations had been well and truly pricked. The post has generated 11.1M views at the time of writing, an indication that this topic was close to many a cinephile’s heart.

The poster also added that she was shocked at this as “I’ve only seen it popped in front of me (freshly made at cinemas)”.

However, she did concede that this was on the opening weekend of the hugely anticipated The Devil Wears Prada 2 and perhaps the pre-made stock was in expectation of huge crowds, thus requiring excess stock to be on stand-by.

A few reacted with incredulity and disbelief that they were not getting freshly made popcorn at cinemas. This was sacrilege as a whole host of GIFs and memes seem to suggest.

One even went as far to blame artificial intelligence for the image as it was a question of preserving one’s mental health!

However, a few blue-collar workers with first-hand experience offered explanations for this. One justified that having such pre-packed supplies were for emergencies when the popcorn kettle machine decides to take an extended break.

Others who have also similar work experiences also offered different explanations. One claimed that these pre-packed kernels were the sweet variety as the salted version was freshly made. This was to avoid the messy clean-up associated with the sweet popcorn.

Big opening weekends, catering events and large school groups were other reasons why this cinema may have resorted to this practice.

It was also claimed by another long-serving cineplex employee that this did not make economic sense as popcorn kernels are cheap and making fresh popcorn is “like legally printing money”. The sight and smell of fresh popcorn being prepared was very much part of the fun and draw.

Some sought to calm fears of impending popcorn crisis by insisting that freshly popped kernels were still being served at their local cineplexes.
