Manufacturer fined RM30K after worker loses 4 fingers in mishap

A manufacturing company has been slapped with a RM30,000 fine by the Butterworth sessions court over a workplace mishap which resulted in a worker losing four fingers.

The occupational safety and health department said judge Roslan Hamid meted out the sentence after the company’s representative pleaded guilty to failing to ensure the safety of its workers.

The department said the incident occurred while the worker was using an angle grinder to build a table, Harian Metro reported.

“Due to the absence of safe work systems, the worker was severely injured and lost four fingers, from his index finger to his pinky finger,” said the department.

The charge was framed under Section 15(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act 1994, which is punishable by a maximum of RM500,000 fine, up to two years in prison, or both, upon conviction.

Another manufacturing firm was fined RM40,000 by the same court after a worker lost a finger in a workplace accident in July last year.

The employer pleaded guilty to failing to provide safe work systems for the installation and testing of its silicone rubber sorting machines. - FMT
