CAMERON HIGHLANDS: Eight boys were safely rescued after being stranded on a rock during a water surge at Sungai Menson near the Kampung Terisu Orang Asli settlement here today.
Firefighters used safety ropes to cross the fast-flowing river before bringing all the Orang Asli boys, aged between 4 and 12, to safety.
Cameron Highlands fire station chief Wan Mohd Aiman Wan Mohd Yusof said they were alerted to the incident about 5.10pm.
Wan Mohd Aiman said the boys from the nearby settlement were believed to be in the water when the river level rose rapidly due to a water surge.
"All the victims gathered and sat on a rock in the middle of the river. The boys were about 20 metres from the riverbank.
"Firefighters used safety ropes to reach them and fitted them with life jackets before helping to bring them across the river one by one," he said in a statement today.
Wan Mohd Aiman said all the boys were rescued about 8pm before being handed over to their families.
The operation ended about 10 minutes later.
He said that besides seven firefighters from the Cameron Highlands station, the operation also involved two firemen from the Ringlet station.
Meanwhile, a video shared by the Cameron Highlands Fire and Rescue Department showed firefighters, with ropes tied around their waists, attempting to cross the murky river to reach the boys. - NST
