KUALA LUMPUR: Netizens took to social media to criticise the apparent lack of traffic control and safety measures during a fun run event at Vision Park Bertam today.
A video shared by Threads user naaffah showed participants running on a public road alongside moving traffic, with some forced to dodge passing cars and motorcycles.
User acap_azhar, who encountered the runners along the route of the event claimed participants occupied a stretch of about 2km with no traffic cones in sight.
"There were many participants, around 5,000. One lane should have been closed as the road is also an alternative route," he said.
Others also questioned the absence of marshals and traffic police to ensure they kept to a single lane, with runners spread across both sides of the road.
"Whether it's a working day or a holiday, the road is regularly used by motorists in the morning.
"There was no one controlling traffic, leaving drivers and motorcyclists to be extra cautious to avoid hitting runners," naaffah commented.
Meanwhile, other users claimed motorists had to honk and were met with angry reactions from participants.
Some runners also expressed dissatisfaction with the event's organisation.
One user claimed the event was too crowded.
"My family were among the last to start running because it was so crowded. I was shocked to see so many participants conquering the road," user azie_ms commented.
Meanwhile, user nrfnsuri00 asked why the route was not properly managed or marked.
"This is dangerous. If a car or a motorbike crashes it would become a problem," said user 4iman_j3fry.
Others urged the organisers to improve future editions of the event and prioritise the safety of participants and other road users.
Meanwhile, the organisers of Kopi Run 2026 issued a statement through the Penang Runners By Unity Running Club's Facebook page to acknowledge the issues raised by participants.
The organisers apologised for the event's logistical issues, explaining that partial road closures were restricted by permit rules.
The organisers also denied claims that marshals and safety personnel were absent, adding that they were stationed at several key locations to manage the event's traffic. - NST
