Is Bersama planning to contest more than 10 seats in Johor?

Parti Bersama Malaysia supporters are waiting with bated breath for the party to reveal how many seats it plans to contest in the upcoming Johor state election.

Party co-leaders Rafizi Ramli and Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad have remained tight-lipped so far, but a vital clue may reveal their plans.

In a social media post yesterday, Rafizi said that the party plans to mobilise 20 percent of its members for the Johor polls, and deploy at least 400 members in each constituency it is contesting.

The party hasn't revealed its latest membership numbers as of yet, but it is estimated to have exceeded 20,000 members - a milestone Rafizi previously expected the party would hit by late May.

Assuming 20,000 members as a minimum, and its deployment targets, the math suggests that Bersama may contest at least 10 seats in the upcoming polls.

Malaysiakini's previous analysis of polling data from the 2022 general election found that Stulang, Larkin, Gambir, Serom, Tangkak, Buloh Kasap, Bukit Batu, Layang-Layang, and Kempas are possible seats that Bersama may contest.

Going solo

The party has previously said that it plans to contest the election solo, and will not limit itself to contesting PKR seats only.

Several of the seats on Malaysiakini's list are currently held by DAP and Umno.

Bersama had previously opened public applications to contest under the party's logo.

The process requires applicants to declare their income and assets along with their education, career, and family backgrounds.

Applicants will also be screened based on their backgrounds, while qualitative surveys in their local communities will be done to obtain feedback on them.

Registration for members to volunteer to campaign in Johor will open this coming Monday, according to Rafizi. - Mkini
