UMNO Youth Chief Datuk Dr Muhammad Akmal Saleh said an apology is not enough from MCA for the upside-down hoisting of the Jalur Gemilang and Perak state flags at the Perak MCA headquarters in Ipoh.
He said the employee’s resignation is also not sufficient, adding, “I want to ask MCA, is that really all? Are you just going to leave it at that?”
He did not say what he wanted MCA to do next.
In the Facebook video post, Akmal also urged the police to pursue their investigation transparently and called on the government to toughen laws and penalties against individuals who disrespect national symbols.
He emphasised that his stance applies consistently regardless of political affiliations or racial background.
“I remain consistent – whether you are a friend, an opponent, or whoever, regardless of skin colour or political affiliation. When there is an attempt to demean our flag, such actions are unacceptable to us,” he said.
MCA made a public apology by its Perak Chairman Dr Mah Hang Soon, who explained that an elderly staff member mistakenly installed the flags upside down while preparing for the national month celebrations.
The flags were immediately corrected once the error was noticed, and Perak MCA accepted the staff member’s voluntary offer to resign.
This is the second time this month that Akmal has blasted ‘allies’ on the national flag.
On Aug 11, he requested Terengganu Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar to order the Kuala Terengganu City Council (MBKT) to provide proof regarding a damaged Jalur Gemilang missing its crescent and star symbols.
The request follows criticism from DAP MP RSN Rayer, who accused UMNO Youth of maintaining silence over the Terengganu flag incident at Dataran Batu Buruk.
Addressing the viral video showing the incomplete flag, MBKT Mayor Lizan Che Mat and Samsuri explained that the missing stitched symbols had inadvertently torn off due to strong coastal winds before the flag was replaced.
In a video posted following the incident, Akmal urged MBKT to inspect the flag for stitching marks to confirm the claim.
He stated that if no stitch marks are found, strict action should be taken against those responsible for hoisting an incomplete flag.
