The finance ministry says stronger enforcement, a robust economy and the government’s financial capacity also contributed to the decision.
It said the decision to raise the quota from 200 litres to 300 litres a month for recipients of BUDI95 and BUDI Diesel also took into account stricter enforcement, strong economic performance and the government’s financial capacity.
“The move also considered the needs of those who have to travel long distances for their daily affairs as well as small traders who rely on vehicles to earn a living.
“The Madani government will continue to ensure that fuel subsidies are channelled to eligible Malaysians, while strengthening efforts to curb leakages, smuggling and misuse,” it said in a statement.
The government had reduced the monthly BUDI95 quota from 300 litres to 200 litres effective April 1 as a temporary measure amid higher global crude prices and supply chain disruptions linked to the West Asia conflict.
According to the finance ministry, 16 million users enjoy subsidised RON95 at RM1.99 a litre, while more than 700,000 of them are also eligible for subsidised diesel at RM2.10 a litre.
It said more than half a million eligible private diesel vehicle owners of pickup trucks and jeeps could apply for an additional 100 litres a month, increasing their total monthly entitlement to 400 litres.
“Eligible pickup truck and jeep owners who have yet to apply for the additional quota can do so through the BUDI Madani portal.
“For pickup truck and jeep owners who were previously approved for the additional 100 litres, their entitlement will automatically be adjusted to 400 litres from Sept 1,” it said. - FMT
