Fifty-five Malaysians remain uncontactable following the floods and landslides that struck Rasuwa District, Nepal, on Aug 26, according to the Foreign Ministry.
“Two Malaysians previously reported as uncontactable have since been contacted, and verification of the remaining cases is ongoing,” the ministry, widely known as Wisma Putra, said in its latest statement updating the situation in Nepal and surrounding areas.
The Malaysian Embassy in Kathmandu continues to work with Nepal’s Foreign Affairs Ministry Emergency Response Team, the Nepal Tourism Board, travel agencies and relevant local authorities.
“Search and rescue operations in Nepal remain ongoing, while authorities are also monitoring the risk of further water surges from the Tibet Autonomous Region, China,” it said.
As at 5pm Nepal time (7.15pm Malaysia time) Aug 28, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority of Nepal reported that 771 people had been rescued, including 116 foreign nationals.
“Based on the official list available at this stage, no Malaysian has been identified among the foreign nationals rescued to date,” said Wisma Putra.
It further said it has expanded its consular response to include Malaysians stranded in China due to travel disruptions arising from the floods and landslides in Nepal.
“A group of 72 Malaysians in Darchen, China, has been confirmed safe and in good health,” it said.
Wisma Putra said the Malaysian Embassy in Beijing is in contact with the group, and their families are aware of their status.
“The embassy is providing consular assistance, including support for their travel arrangements to leave the Tibet Autonomous Region, China,” it said.
Establishing contact
Separately, the ministry said it had received information from the Chinese authorities and family members regarding 36 Malaysians who are currently reported as uncontactable in areas affected by telecommunications disruptions.
“The ministry is working closely with the Chinese authorities and family members to establish contact with the individuals concerned.
“The information is also being cross-checked against reports involving Malaysians in Nepal to identify any duplication as verification continues,” it said.
The ministry’s operations room in Putrajaya has been operating around the clock since Aug 27 to coordinate information and assist Malaysians in the affected areas and their families.

The ministry urged the public not to speculate or share unverified information while efforts to establish the safety and whereabouts of the Malaysians concerned remain ongoing.
“Further updates will be provided based on verified information received through official channels,” said the ministry, noting that it continues to monitor developments closely.
