Malaysia was never built for only one community, says Salleh

Malaysia was never built for people of one race or religion, or a small group of politicians, says Sabah Umno veteran Salleh Said Keruak. Instead, he said the country belongs to all Malaysians.

“Every community must feel that they have a place, a voice and a stake in the country’s future,” said Salleh, a former Sabah chief minister, in a Facebook posting on the eve of National Day and Sabah Day.

Salleh said the country’s strength lay in its diversity. The Malaysia that people see today was due to the contributions of the various ethnic communities.

Malaysia did not only belong to the current generation, but also the next one and the Malaysia that they will inherit must be more united, fair, prosperous and confident, he said.

Salleh also said nation-building was a continuous journey. “Our responsibility isn’t just honouring the past, but ensuring that the foundations we have laid down today remain strong for future generations.” - FMT
