UTM Pro-Chancellor Che Puan Mahkota Khaleeda Johor also graced the biennial event, which was also attended by UTM Pro-Chancellor Tan Sri Datuk Professor Emeritus Dr Mohd Zulkifli Mohd Ghazali and Japanese Ambassador to Malaysia Shikata Noriyuki.
At the event, Raja Zarith Sofiah witnessed a video presentation and the launch of the Book Publishing Endowment Initiative, as well as the presentation of mock cheques by donors for the development of education and student welfare.
The Royal Gala Dinner was also enlivened by entertainment and a special singing performance by guest artiste Wani Hasrita.
Meanwhile, UTM Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Mohd Shafry Mohd Rahim, in his address, expressed his highest appreciation to all guests, donors and philanthropists, as well as congratulated the entire committee for their hard work in making the special event a success.
He said the UTM Royal Gala Dinner, now being held for the fifth time, is a biennial university initiative to raise funds to support student welfare and education as well as UTM's development.
He said UTM received RM16 million in contributions this year from donors including Bidari Kekal Sdn. Bhd, Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), Johor Port Bhd, Awantec Systems Sdn Bhd and Permodalan Nasional Bhd.
"To date, UTM has awarded 1,013 Endowment Scholarships to B40 students. Cumulatively, the UTM Endowment Fund has raised RM183.72 million, with RM30.93 million utilised for scholarships.
"In addition, more than 500 B40 students have received living assistance, more than 5,000 students have received free food assistance and more than 400 students have received festive pocket money assistance, regardless of race and religion," he said.
Shafry said UTM's humanitarian spirit also transcended borders, with UTM having sponsored 10 Palestinian students to pursue Doctor of Philosophy studies at UTM since 2023 through the UTM Serambi Al-Quds Programme.
"I would also like to extend our sincere appreciation to His Excellency Shikata Noriyuki, Ambassador of Japan to Malaysia, and to JICA, for their continued support, contribution and partnership with UTM, which have created meaningful impact in advancing education, research, and stronger Malaysia–Japan collaboration," he said. - NST
