Armizan praises Cabinet professionalism amid political shifts

Relations among Cabinet members remain harmonious, constructive and professional despite some operatives from government parties trading barbs, says domestic trade and cost of living minister Armizan Mohd Ali.

Armizan said this reflected the political maturity and sense of responsibility shared by the ministers, as observed by an “external observer” not directly linked to the new dynamics between the key parties in government.

While he did not name them, the Gabungan Rakyat Sabah secretary-general was likely referring to Pakatan Harapan and Barisan Nasional.

Armizan said he was impressed and grateful for the political maturity shown by his Cabinet colleagues from various parties.

“I am impressed that despite party operatives outside trading barbs over the past few months, the relations and interactions among their top leaders during every Cabinet meeting have remained harmonious, constructive and professional.

“This maturity is built on a commitment to form a unity consensus as part of ensuring the country has a stable government to drive the nation’s development and preserve the people’s wellbeing.

“This responsibility of ensuring stability in the government so that it can fulfil its mandate stems from the agreement on the unity government’s formation, which was signed on Dec 16, 2022,” he said in a Facebook post in conjunction with the 69th Merdeka Day celebrations.

Ties between PH and BN deteriorated following the Johor and Negeri Sembilan state elections, especially after the latter coalition worked with Perikatan Nasional in the Negeri Sembilan polls.

Armizan, who is also Papar MP, said the current situation reflects how Malaysia’s political landscape has changed following the end of one-party dominance, requiring all sides to accept the need for cooperation and compromise.

He added that the frequent change in prime ministers between 2018 and 2022 within a single parliamentary term was not a good formula to build sustainable national prosperity.

This experience demonstrated the importance of balancing a party’s political interests with the greater responsibility of ensuring national stability, said Armizan. - FMT
