
CLEAN energy solutions outfit Gentari through its wholly owned subsidiary Gentari Renewables Sdn Bhd has completed Phase 2 of its rooftop solar project at Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP) thus, further expanding the university’s on-site renewable energy capacity.
The latest installation adds a 306.8 kilowatt (kW) solar photovoltaic (PV) system on UTP’s Research & Development Building, hence complementing the existing 7.4 megawatt (MW) rooftop solar system installed across the university’s Chancellor Complex and canopy walkway during Phase 1 in 2022.
Together, the two phases bring UTP’s installed rooftop solar capacity to 7.7MW, thus placing UTP among Malaysia’s university campuses with significant on-site solar capacity.
Both phases are delivered through 21-year solar power purchase agreements (PPA) with Gentari designing, financing, installing and operating the solar facilities which enables the generation of clean energy to support campus needs.

To date, UTP’s solar PV system has generated more than 43.5 million kWh of clean electricity, lowering approximately 29,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (tCO₂e) emissions annually.
“This project demonstrates what long-term renewable energy partnerships can achieve through technical expertise, disciplined execution and shared commitment,” enthused Gentari’s group chief operating officer (COO) and Malaysia country head of Shah Yang Razalli.
“Completing Phase 2 is a testament to the strength of our collaboration with UTP. We remain committed to delivering clean energy solutions that support the university’s long-term objectives.”

All in all, the completion of Phase 2 marks another significant milestone in UTP’s low carbon campus journey, according to its president and CEO Mohamed Firouz Asnan.
“This reinforces our commitment to embedding sustainability across our campus operations in support of UTP’s broader sustainability agenda and contributing to PETRONAS’ Net Zero Carbon Emissions by 2050 aspiration,” he asserted.
Beyond expanding our renewable energy capacity, this initiative strengthens UTP’s role as a living laboratory for education, research and innovation, thus providing students and researchers with opportunities for applied learning, research and industry collaboration using real-world renewable energy infrastructure.

Completed in April 2022, Phase 1 of the project was recognised by the Malaysia Book of Records as the country’s largest single rooftop solar installation.
