29-year-old had been under remand since his arrest on April 22.
PETALING JAYA: The assistant warden of a tahfiz school who was suspected of having abused 11-year-old Mohamad Thaqif Amin Mohd Gaddafi was released on a RM20,000 court bond today.
The Star said sessions judge Salawati Djambari allowed the application to release the suspect with one surety under Section 118 of the Criminal Procedure Code.
The 29-year-old was arrested on April 22 to assist police investigations into the case.
The case was reclassified as murder following Thaqif’s death on April 26. The boy was admitted to Hospital Sultan Ismail in Johor Bahru on April 19 for injuries to his legs, allegedly inflicted during a beating by the assistant warden.
On April 21, doctors amputated his legs in a bid to prevent infection to tissues and blood cells in his body. The following day, though, he lapsed into a coma.
Doctors later found that his right hand had turned black due to a bacterial infection and blood clots had started to form on his left shoulder. They informed his family that his arm had also turned necrotic.
Thaqif had been due for further surgery to amputate his right arm as well, but died before the procedure could take place.
The case sparked public outrage, especially following reports that the assistant warden had a previous criminal record and had served jail time for theft.
He was said to have beaten Thaqif and several other tahfiz students with a rubber hose. -FMT
