Zulkifli Mohamad al-Bakri says he took a ride on the motorcycle to attend a moon-sighting for Ramadan as the roads were congested.
PETALING JAYA: Federal Territory (FT) mufti Zulkifli Mohamad al-Bakri has apologised to the police and the Road Transport Department (JPJ) for breaking road safety rules by not wearing a helmet while taking a ride on a motorbike.
In a posting on Facebook, he said he was rushing to a moon-sighting programme on the eve of Ramadan at the Kuala Lumpur Tower yesterday.
Accompanying the apology was a photograph Zulkifli uploaded of himself as the pillion rider.
“It was decided that I should take a ride on the motorbike to the event as the roads were congested with traffic and I did not want to trouble the organisers and disrupt the smooth running of the programme,” he said.
“We wish to extend our apologies to the police and JPJ for our action,” he added.
“I hope no misunderstanding arises over what has happened,” he said, ending the message with a greeting for Ramadan.
His apology drew praises from his Facebook followers who said the gesture was exemplary.
“Your morals serve as a good example and are inspirational. Thank you for being a model for upholding values like this,” wrote Mohd Ifzad.
Dyard Dagang said the mufti was eligible to use the services of a police escort to get to the event.
“In my area there is a VIP. Every day the police escort his car when it leaves the house,” he said.
He said Zulkifli should have had a police escort as well since he had contributed towards and sacrificed significantly for Islam. FMT
