The High Court in Kuala Lumpur today allowed Perkasa's application to intervene in the suit filed by 19 people seeking, among others, an order for the arrest and deportation of controversial Islamic preacher Zakir Naik.
"Perkasa, being an NGO, in our constitution, we are obliged to protect Islam as the religion of the federation, therefore we have locus standi to intervene," Perkasa's lawyer Adnan Seman told reporters at the Kuala Lumpur court complex today.
The plaintiffs, Adnan said, had no objection to their application to intervene, while the defendants left it to the court to decide.
Judge Kamaludin Md Said then allowed the application.
Hindraf chairperson P Waythamoorthy and 18 others, including Bingkor assemblyperson Jeffrey Kitingan, outspoken lawyer Siti Kassim and Centre for Policy Initiatives director Lim Teck Ghee had filed the suit in March.
The plaintiffs also sought declarations that Zakir is a threat to national security, harmony and unity.
The defendants are Home Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, the Immigration Department director-general, the National Registration Department director-general, IGP Khalid Abu Bakar and the government.
The next case management date has been fixed for July 20.
Zakir was recently revealed to be holding a permanent resident (PR) status in Malaysia, since five years ago.
He is wanted by Indian authorities for money laundering, with a special trial court in Mumbai under India's Prevention of Money Laundering Act 2002 having issued a non-bailable warrant of arrest against Zakir.
India's National Investigation Agency (NIA) is also seeking an Interpol red notice against him.- Mkini
