Figures from January to April this year show Chinese-owned businesses came up tops in flouting council laws while the Malays had the most unlicensed outlets.
GEORGE TOWN: Chinese-owned businesses in Penang Island were the most hit by enforcement action in the first four months of the year, statistics released by the local authorities here showed, following claims of bias towards the Malays when it came to enforcement.
The statistics, released by the Penang Island City Council yesterday, showed that enforcement action was taken against 158 Chinese businesses, followed by Malays (103), Indians (31) and others (13).
However, the highest number of hawkers operating without a licence were Malays at 53 cases, while the Chinese had the highest number of citations for obstruction of public places at 76 cases.
The Chinese also came up tops in illegal extensions, with 26 such cases recorded.
Yesterday, two seafood stall workers had hijacked a city council enforcement lorry in an attempt to prevent their illegal eatery from being raided for the fourth time.
The men drove the lorry for 2km to the Pulau Tikus police station, where they lodged a report against the city council raiding team.
The two men filmed their entire hijacking on their phones and later uploaded the videos to Facebook.
City council officials say the eatery had been operating illegally on government reserve land and had been raided three times since April last year.
Council officials say the lorry was left with its engine running as the driver was lowering a loading ramp at the rear.
Police have arrested two men, aged 28 and 34, for using criminal force to deter a public servant from discharging his duty under the Penal Code.
The two men have been remanded for three days until May 7. -FMT
