Defence minister pledges thorough probe into navy cadet's death

Defence Minister Mohamad Sabu has pledged that a thorough investigation will be conducted into the death of navy cadet J Soosaimanicckam, two months ago.
In a statement today, the minister, who is better known as Mat Sabu, said he would instruct the Royal Malaysian Navy to immediately initiate a probe into the incident at its base in Lumut, Perak, and release a report on it.
"I assure that this investigation will be conducted in an independent and fair manner, and there will be no cover-up.
"I also plead to the family of the deceased to be patient until the investigation is completed. Strict action will be taken if anyone is found to have been involved in wrongdoing, which resulted in Soosaimanicckam's death," said Mohamad.
He was responding to a call by Lawyers for Liberty (LFL) and the deceased's family yesterday for the police and the Defence Ministry to expedite investigations into Soosaimanicckam's death on May 19.
According to LFL advisor N Surendran, the 27-year-old had died just a week after he was enrolled at the base for training, and a post-mortem revealed that he had died from excess fluid in his lungs.
The former cadet had also alleged torture in a text message to his brother, just a day after his enrolment.
Suspecting foul play, the family had lodged two police reports on Soosaimanicckam's death, but to date, there has been no satisfactory explanation given, said Surendran.
The Navy also conducted an internal inquiry into the matter, but did not call the victim's family members to attend the inquiry, he added. -Mkini
