Deputy law minister roasts 'emotional' PAS' claims that Islam undermined

Deputy minister in the Prime Minister's Department, Mohamed Hanipa Maidin has rebuked PAS for claiming that Islam was being undermined by the Pakatan Harapan government.
"I found their arguments to be coloured by emotion and sloganistic tendencies rather than high intellectualism.
"I am not sure how they measured Harapan's hard work to promote transparency, combat wastage, corruption, and abuse of power through the lens of Islam," Hanipa said in a statement today.
Yesterday, PAS information chief Nasrudin Hasan claimed Muslims were feeling jittery as the top three government posts involving law was held by non-Muslims.
These are attorney-general Tommy Thomas, de facto law minister Liew Vui Keong, and newly minted Chief Justice Richard Malanjum.
Rebutting Nasrudin, Hanipa said Liew had empowered him as his deputy to oversee all legal matters involving Islam and shariah matters.
Meanwhile, the Amanah vice-president said the Federal Constitution draws clear boundaries on the attorney-general's jurisdiction over shariah matters.
As for Malanjum's appointment as chief justice, Hanipa said it was irresponsible to paint the former as anti-Islam based on dissenting judgements in certain cases.
"Such attitude (to paint Malanjum as anti-Islam), belittles the stature and excellence of Islam," the deputy minister said.
While Nasrudin did not cite any specific cases, but one incident Malanjum's critics point to is his dissenting judgement in the Lina Joy apostasy case.
Lawyer Haniff Khatri Abdulla, however, said it was unfair to say any judge in the case was anti-Islam or pro-Islam.
He also said that the allegations against Malanjum also maliciously assumed that Islam's constitutional position as the official religion, allows for discrimination against others based on race or religion. -Mkini
