Former premier Najib Abdul Razak's family can turn to the courts if they believe the authorities were wrong in freezing their bank accounts, said former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
“If they say it is wrong, they can take it to court,” he told a press conference in Putrajaya today.
Mahathir also denied that his administration was taking revenge against Najib and claimed that he never complained when the previous government took similar action against his friends.
“Why would we want to take revenge? Whatever they did last time, we didn’t complain.
“All my friends were chased off for being my friends, their accounts were frozen (but) we didn’t complain,” he said.
Prior to the 14th general election, Mahathir had repeatedly complained of how the Inland Revenue Board (IRB) was targetting his friends.
Yesterday, Najib’s daughter Nooryana Najwa had claimed that her personal bank accounts, along with her 10-month-old son's have been frozen after she posted bail for her father.
Nooryana had questioned if the government wanted to “eliminate” their entire family with this move.
Najib’s son Norashman Najib's account has also allegedly been frozen.
Najib was charged at the Kuala Lumpur High Court on Wednesday with three counts of criminal breach of trust and one count of abuse of power in relation to the SRC International case.
Bail was set at RM1 million and Najib was allowed to leave after his family posted half the sum of the bail.
The other half of the bail must be paid by next Monday. - Mkini
