The Amanah leader says in the Sungai Kandis by-election, PAS is taking the opportunity to team up with Umno to bring down PH.
Amanah deputy president Salahuddin Ayub says the PAS-Umno relationship is getting very serious.
GEORGE TOWN: PAS and Umno seem to be “very much in love” and their relationship is getting very serious, Amanah deputy president Salahuddin Ayub said today.
His comments were in reference to PAS staying out of the Sungai Kandis by-election so that Barisan Nasional (BN) could win.
“Their actions speak louder than words. The people see it and understand it better.
“This is because while they agreed to not field a candidate in this by-election, they had contested the seat in the 14th general election.
“They see an opportunity to team up with Umno to bring Pakatan Harapan (PH) down and I feel they are taking that opportunity.
“I think they are getting very serious in their relationship. It is very timely for me to ask: ‘How deep is your love?’”
PAS had decided not to contest the Sungai Kandis by-election to ensure a straight fight between PH and BN instead of splitting the vote for the opposition.
“To us, we want PH to lose in Sungai Kandis because we want to send a signal to the government to implement their May 9 election promises.
“There are 1,001 reasons to reject PH,” the Islamist party’s information chief Nasrudin Hassan Tantawi said in a post on Facebook.
PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan later said the party was not ready to contest the by-election as it was still studying the findings of its GE14 post-mortem report.
With campaigning having entered its seventh day today, some Umno leaders have resorted to dwelling on PH’s unfulfilled promises, and how the pact is not defending the rights of Malays, as well as harping on the issue of non-Muslims taking up important posts such as the attorney-general, the chief justice and the finance minister.
Salahuddin said there was nothing surprising about this, as Umno would always play the race and religion card.
“Even though the AG, CJ and the finance minister are not Malays, this does not go against the Federal Constitution at all.
“As a Malaysian, a Malay and Muslim living in this country, the Federal Constitution, to me, is a document that protects our harmony,” he said.
He cited how in the past, when the likes of Tan Siew Sin and HS Lee, non-Malays were appointed as finance ministers, the country did not go bankrupt.
He said it was wrong to say non-Malays have brought destruction to the country. He also pointed out that PH places importance on integrity.
“Give them time to carry out their reforms. Tommy Thomas as the AG has already vowed to put an end to selective prosecution. Lim Guan Eng, as the finance minister, wants to expose the misappropriations in the country and bring the country to greater heights.
“Give them time. It has only been three months (since PH) came to power. Do you think it is reasonable for the rakyat to be convinced that we have become so liberal and negligent, to the point that we have forsaken the Malays?”
The Sungai Kandis state by-election on Aug 4 will see a three-cornered fight between PKR, Barisan Nasional and an independent candidate.
The candidates are Mohd Zawawi Ahmad Mughni (PKR), Lokman Noor Adam (BN) and K Murthy (independent).
The by-election was brought about by the death of assemblyman Mat Shuhaimi Shafiei of PKR, who died of cancer on July 2. - FMT
