‘I DON’T WANT TO DO THINGS SLOPPILY’ – NIE CHING AIMS FOR UEC RECOGNITION BY YEAR-END: ‘PUTRAJAYA NEEDS TO WORK OUT THE MECHANISM FIRST, THEN BRING IT TO PARLIAMENT FOR APPROVAL,’ SAYS DEPUTY EDUCATION MINISTER

Deputy Education Minister Teo Nie Ching aims to have the Unified Examination Certificate (UEC) officially recognised by year end.
“I hope I can finish this job before this year end, that is my aim.
“It may take time to build a school, but this (UEC recognition) can be done as soon as possible. I don’t like to do things sloppily,” she told reporters when met in Semenyih today.
Teo said there was no need to bring the matter to Parliament, as the government had previously given recognition to the A-levels certificate without debating it in the Dewan Rakyat.
Instead, she said, Putrajaya will need to sort out the mechanism to recognise the UEC, which the education minister can then bring to Parliament for approval.
Pakatan Harapan in its manifesto had said it would ensure the UEC be used for entry into public higher education institutions, provided that applicants have a credit in Bahasa Malaysia at the SPM level.
The UEC, which is issued to graduates of Chinese independent high schools, is currently recognised by local private higher education institutions and many universities overseas, as well as the Sarawak government.
Teo was speaking to reporters after attending a memorial for late DAP aide Teoh Beng Hock.
