Jawi officer: We didn’t show authority cards at transgender event

Federal Territories Islamic Religious Department officer Siti Nor Jihan Saleh says members of the Jawi team conducting the raid also did not identify themselves.
Lawyer Siti Kasim is on trial for allegedly preventing a Jawi officer from carrying out her duties.
KUALA LUMPUR: A Federal Territories Islamic Religious Department officer admitted in the Magistrate’s Court that a Jawi team raiding a closed-door transgender event did not show their authority cards.
“Yes, the video did not show us taking out our authority cards and identifying ourselves to those people at the event, including Siti Kasim,” said Siti Nor Jihan Saleh.
Jihan was testifying at the trial of lawyer Siti Kasim on a charge of preventing the officer from carrying out her duties during the Jawi raid on the event on April 3, 2016.
The offence, under Section 186 of the Penal Code, carries a jail term of not more than two years, a maximum fine of RM10,000, or both, upon conviction.
Jihan was questioned by Siti’s lawyer Suzana Norlihan Alias whether the Jawi team had complied with guidelines when it conducted the raid.
She also said Siti did not make any body contact with her Jawi team members.
“She did not touch my operation leader or any other officers.
“The one that attempted to force my leader out was another individual that I believe was a bouncer,” she said.
Earlier today, Jihan told the court she was unaware Siti attended the event as a lawyer for the organiser.
A video of Siti shouting at the Jawi officers, demanding if they had a warrant to raid the private event, went viral on social media.
Jihan also said no one had so far been prosecuted by Jawi for their involvement in the transgender event.
“Not even Siti Kasim,” she said, in response to Suzana on whether Siti was charged in the Shariah Court for refusing to give her personal information to Jawi.
Jihan said the bouncer who tried to force her operation leader out from the event was also not prosecuted for obstruction.
The trial before Magistrate Maizatul Munirah Abd Rahman will resume on July 27. - FMT
