PARLIAMENT | Members of Parliament are given an hour and a half lunch break during Dewan Rakyat sittings.
However, even this proved insufficient as proceedings were delayed for five minutes when lawmakers from both sides of the aisle failed to meet the minimum quorum of 26.
When the bell rang to signal the end of the lunch break at 2.30pm, Dewan Rakyat speaker Mohammad Ariff Md Yusof entered the House and asked Noor Azmi Ghazali (Ind-Bagan Serai) to continue his debate.
However, Alexander Nanta Linggi (PBB-Kapit) then asked the speaker whether the quorum for Dewan Rakyat was fulfilled.
"Even the ministers and the deputy ministers are not in," he said.
This prompted the parliament secretariat to ring the House bell again.
When Ariff realised the minimum quorum was not met, he allocated an extra two minutes for it to be filled.
More MPs gradually entered the Dewan Rakyat as the bell continued to ring.
When the bell stopped, Ariff announced there were 35 MPs present, which fulfilled the quorum.
He then asked Noor Azmi to continue with his debate once more.
Later, Agriculture Minister Salahuddin Ayub (Harapan-Pulai), Steven Choong (Harapan-Tebrau) and Chan Ming Kai (Harapan-Alor Setar) were among others seen entering the House. - Mkini
