New law minister confirms decentralisation in PMD

Newly appointed de facto law minister Liew Vui Keong has confirmed that several law-related portfolios currently under the purview of the Prime Minister’s Department have been "decentralised" in a restructuring exercise.
When contacted, the Batu Sapi MP said he had met with chief secretary to the government Ali Hamsa who informed him of the matter after the swearing-in ceremonyheld at Istana Negara this morning.
"I was made to understand that there would be a decentralisation with regards to matters on the administration of certain portfolios in the PMD inclusive of law," he told Malaysiakini.
Liew, who is also Parti Warisan Sabah permanent chairperson, said this when asked for clarification on a June 26 letter signed by Ali which stated that the decentralisation proposal was brought up by PMD itself and have also been discussed with Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
According to the letter, the functions of PMD's Judicial Management Cluster in charge of Department of Syariah Judiciary Malaysia and the Federal Court Chief Registrar's Office, have been transferred to a new Law and Judicial Ministry.
It also stated that five agencies listed as being under the Legal Management Cluster, Human Resources Management and Human Capital Development Cluster and others, have been transferred out and combined under the same new ministry.
Liew, however, said that he would only be briefed on details of the decentralisation process tomorrow including whether it would involve the setting up of a new ministry.
"I expect to be fully briefed when I report for duty tomorrow morning.
"I will also have to wait for the prime minister's further instructions on the matter before I can say anything further," he added
In total, the restructuring plan involved some 90 entities under the PMD, which have now been reduced to 26.
Forty of the 90 have been moved out, while the remaining have either been abolished or merged. - Mkini
