Nik Nazmi urges Anwar to run for party presidency

PKR Youth chief Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad has urged the party's de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim to run for the presidency in PKR's leadership election in September.
This came after PKR president and Deputy Prime Minister Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail stated that she would step aside should Anwar wanted to go for the top party post.
"She has indicated that she is prepared to stand aside should Anwar decide to contest the PKR presidency in the coming party elections," Nik Nazmi, who is the Setiawangsa MP, said in a statement today.
"We salute and thank Wan Azizah for her willingness to do so. We thank her for her selflessness and for her always putting the interests of the country as well as the party before her own," he said.
"She has made history, not only as the country’s first female deputy prime minister but also as a trailblazer for Malaysian women in politics.
"Moving forward, I sincerely hope that Anwar will contest the Keadilan presidency," Nik Nazmi said, adding that this would give the party, its allies in Pakatan Harapan and the rakyat certainty as the New Malaysia is being built.
"I strongly believe that Anwar will be able to bring Malaysia and the party to greater heights.
"When Anwar takes the presidency, he will find himself supported by a young, dynamic and diverse team that is willing and able to serve the country," Nik Nazmi added.
According to a party insider, nominations for the PKR supreme council will be held on July 29 while the nominations for divisions nationwide will go on from July 27 to Aug 5.
Members of PKR divisions nationwide will cast their ballots between Sept 14 and Oct 7.
"This is according to the circular we received. I don't think the party will change the dates again," the PKR official said. -Mkini
