PUTRAJAYA: Former minister Tan Sri Rais Yatim (pic) has called for the dismantling of companies involved in issuing visas.
Rais, who was invited to speak during the Immigration Department monthly assembly on Tuesday (3 July) said these companies took the authority away from the Immigration Department director general.
"I am aware of a company that is based in Beijing. We can do their work, but that company got the job of issuing visas at the price of 178 Yuan (RM107).
"I recommend to the higher authorities to shut down this company," he said, followed by applause from the Immigration Department personnel at the assembly held at the Department headquarters.
.He said the company had raked in profits for long enough, and could even set up the same operations in India and other countries.
"Tun Mahathir Mohamad's 'pelan pembaharuan' should be supported and bodies such as these must go," he said, adding his belief that another company had transgressed the power of the director-general under Section 9A of the Immigration Act.
Rais added that the people wanted to see the return of such powers back to the department.
"He (the director-general) has the power to deny or allow entry of people into the country.
"Now, people are being allowed in, and three months down the road, they are not studying in universities," he said, adding that returning these powers back to the department would be the first step in strengthening the department.
He also said that personnel within the department needed to be courteous in dispensing their duties.- Star
