Umno had sanctioned the move by its three Kedah assemblypersons to back Pakatan Harapan's choice for state assembly speaker.
The party president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the three assemblypersons made the move after receiving the nod from Kedah Umno.
"I respect the decision by the three assemblypersons," Zahid said at a press conference after the Umno supreme council meeting in Kuala Lumpur today.
Earlier today, Former Kuala Kedah MP Ahmad Kassim was appointed as the speaker after garnering 21 votes to the opposition's 15 votes.
The three Umno reps who voted in favour of Ahmad were Guar Chempedak assemblyperson Ku Abdul Rahman Ku Ismail, Norsabrina Mohd Noor (Bandar Baharu), and Suraya Yaacob (Sungai Tiang).
There had been questions over the speaker selection as the Harapan bloc (18 seats) has an equal number of lawmakers as PAS (15) and Umno (3) on the opposition bench.
Utusan Malaysia cited Suraya as saying that the move was not a betrayal of Umno, but rather a fulfilment of their responsibilities to practice mature politics. - Mkini
