Give funds directly to needy, Transparency Int'l tells Waytha

Transparency International Malaysia (TI-M) is calling on Minister in the Prime Minister's Department P Waythamoorthy to change the methods by which funds allocated to the Malaysian Indian Transformation Unit (Mitra) are distributed.
The corruption watchdog's president Dr Muhammad Mohan told Malaysiakini that Mitra should not repeat the practices of the BN government.
"Under the previous government, these funds were channelled to MIC's Indian support, and we see after so many years that many are still marginalised and in the B40 group," he said.
"We are calling on the minister to stop this method of going through associations and NGOs, and instead channel the funds directly to the needy to avoid any misappropriation."
TI-M also called for more details on Mitra's expenditure to be released, compared to the information currently available on its website.
"This should include who are the recipients of the aid, the amount of financial assistance given to them and for what purpose and who is monitoring," said Mohan.
“Greater transparency is for the government's own good, it serves as a precautionary measure to avoid unfair speculation,” he added, noting the recent eruption of a war of words on the matter between Waythamoorthy and Penang Deputy Chief Minister II P Ramasamy. - Mkini
