BUTTERWORTH: An 11-year-old girl was allegedly abused by her stepmother at their flat in Ampang Jajar here.
Malaysian Tamilar Kural president David Marshel said the NGO's representatives, who arrived with the police, found the girl who was found with bruised eyes after being alerted by neighbours at about 2pm Sunday (Feb 9).
"There were eight other siblings in the unit, but only this girl was allegedly abused.
"She was trembling in fear when we approached and spoke to her.
"The girl alleged that her stepmother had hit her on the head with a helmet.
"The impact caused her eyes to swell and cuts on the forehead.
"Both her arms and legs were also swollen and there were injury scars on her back," said Marshel after bringing the girl for a medical check-up at the Seberang Jaya Hospital.
He said a police report was lodged and the girl's father and stepmother had been arrested.
According to him, the girl will most likely be warded at hospital as her injuries were considered severe.
He said the group will also seek help from the Welfare Department to ensure she received the necessary care.
Meanwhile, Central Seberang Prai OCPD Asst Comm Nik Ros Azhan Nik Abdul Hamid said the girl's stepmother and father were arrested to facilitate investigations.
The case is being investigated under Section 31(a) of the Child Act 2001.- Star
