Mavcom to probe if AirAsia broke aviation laws in Airbus scandal

Mavcom says AirAsia and AirAsiaX will be investigated for possible breach of local aviation laws following their alleged involvement in the Airbus corruption scandal.
PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Aviation Commission, or Mavcom, says it will investigate AirAsia and AirAsiaX for possible violation of aviation laws, after the two budget airlines were named in a multi-billion dollar settlement involving allegations that Airbus bribed airlines around the world to sell its aircrafts.
Mavcom said the two airlines, which had been issued air service licences, were subject to the Malaysian Aviation Commission Act 2015 and the commission’s guidelines.
“The allegations touch on the jurisdictions of multiple agencies in Malaysia and therefore, the commission will cooperate and work with all relevant authorities on this matter,” Mavcom said in a statement.
AirAsia Group Berhad has rejected allegations of wrongdoing after reports cited legal documents showing Airbus paid US$50 million (RM204 million) and offered US$55 million (RM225 million) more, to sponsor a sports team linked to two unnamed “key decision-makers” at AirAsia and AirAsia X.
The documents are part of a multi-billion dollar settlement reached with anti-graft authorities in Britain, France and the US, after the European plane maker admitted to bribery across its international business.
Britain’s The Telegraph had also cited one of the documents, quoting an angry email from one AirAsia executive to a senior Airbus official.
“You owe me four million already and I’m owed 16 million in total. This should have been paid ages ago when I bought the first 60 aircraft. I want my money,” the paper quoted the email.
The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission has said it is in touch with authorities in the UK over the allegations and was investigating the matter. - FMT
